Who will step up?

In the biggest game so far this season, the Vikings will be without starting cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. He was ruled out with a knee injury on Friday with the Vikings set to host the Detroit Lions on Christmas Eve.Asked about the decision, head coach Kevin O’Connell noted that it wasn’t for a lack of effort on Murphy’s part.“Just couldn’t get Byron turned over enough to get him to be available,” O’Connell said. “Hopefully we’ll be able to get him some work and get him back out there with us next week.”This started to feel like a real possibility this week with Murphy unable to participate in practice. His knee injury occurred in last Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and while Murphy managed to make it through the whole game, it became an issue afterward.“That goes to show how tough he is,” O’Connell said. “He battled through it.”The fact that Murphy can’t play this weekend is a h...With Mike Conley, Timberwolves no longer have to ‘live and die’ with late-game iso jumpers

Generally speaking, Anthony Edwards probably owns the title of the Timberwolves’ “closer.” The 22-year-old guard likes the big moments and is certainly capable of delivering in them. His method of doing so is often through isolation play in which he takes — and makes — difficult shots that some would probably describe as “ill-advised.” But the ability to make difficult shots is a big reason why superstars make big money.“It’s great that Ant has the ability to get to the heart of the defense, rise up and make big shots, make tough shots,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch noted. And, to Edwards’ credit, he has knocked down 60 percent of his shots in clutch time — when the game is within five points in the final five minutes of regulation — this season.“But I think in the past, and particularly while he’s been learning to close games, you kind of live and die with some of that,” Finch said. There have been countless games in recent...Community responds to Saint Rose closure at town hall

LOS ANGELES - The St. Louis Cardinals started the offseason as one of the more aggressive teams in the free agent market. But in recent weeks, the Los Angeles Dodgers have emerged as the big spenders and winners of arguably the two best-available talents this winter. Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto join a star-studded Dodgers squad on record deals. Los Angeles will host the Cardinals on Opening Day next year. There's a good chance both will make their new-team debuts against St. Louis. Ohtani, a rare modern baseball hitting-pitching phenom and two-time MVP, officially signed a 10-year, $700 million deal with the Dodgers last week. It's the first contract to exceed half a billion dollars in MLB history and at least double the dollars of every other player not named Mike Trout, Aaron Judge or Mookie Betts.Ohtani stays in Los Angeles after six seasons with the American League's Angels, coming off arguably his best MLB campaign yet. There’s a good chance Colorado drivers traveling for Christmas will encounter slick roads this weekend, with snow forecasts ranging from a few inches along the Front Range to more than 18 inches in the southern mountains, according to the National Weather Service.Colorado Department of Transportation road crews are expecting traffic levels similar to a normal winter weekend, said spokesperson Jared Fiel, and are planning to be out on the roads through Sunday.“It’s looking like it’s going to be hitting the southern mountains a little bit more, and up around here it’s looking like a relatively normal winter storm – but we haven’t had a lot of those this year, so we will take whatever snow they can give us,” Fiel said. There’s typically very little traffic on Christmas Day, Fiel said, and CDOT staggers crew schedules so that everyone has time at home with their family on the holiday.A traffic forecast from the Interstate 70 Coalition advises drivers to expect congestion on westbound I-7...Christmas foods your dog can eat and which ones to avoid

Back in September, Assemblyman Evan Low of San Jose and eight other state lawmakers asked the Attorney General to determine whether the U.S. Constitution’s Fourteenth Amendment bars former President Donald Trump from the ballot for having “engaged in insurrection.”It seemed nothing might ever come of it, as months went by with no word back and the clock ticking toward the state’s March 5 primary. Now this week’s bombshell ruling from Colorado’s highest court, barring Trump from the ballot in the Rocky Mountain State, has renewed the possibility in other states, including California. At least three lawsuits to keep Trump off the ballot are pending in the Golden State, along with calls from California’s Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis this week for the Secretary of State to “explore every legal option” to remove the former president and earlier requests from Low and his fellow state lawmakers.“Our goal was to get this to the courts ...Latest news
