Retiree Pamela Haile has paid property taxes, insurance and other bills on a house she lets out in Oakland, but for more than three years her tenants have paid no rent thanks to one of the longest-lasting eviction bans in the country. The eviction moratorium in the San Francisco Bay Area city expires next month and Haile can't wait. The 69-year-old estimates she is owed more than $60,000 in back rent, money she doubts she will ever see. Moreover, the tenants have trashed her house and it will cost tens of thousands of dollars to make it habitable, she says. Is it cheaper to be a renter or a homeowner near you? “It's unbelievable and it’s like, how can they have the nerve to just let something like this happen? If this happened to them, how would they feel?” Haile said of her tenants. "Dealing with this whole thing gets me so upset.” Eviction moratoriums were put in place across the U.S. at the start of the pandemic in 2020 to prevent displacement and curb the spread of the corona...Fall Down Seven Times, Get Up Eight — Shelby Robins’ Inspiring Story of Never Giving Up

And What We Can Do About It

Discovering An AngelWhen I was a kid, people would sometimes abandon their pets in the everglades, not that far from where we lived. To this day I can’t understand how anybody would leave their pet to be prey to apex predators – alligators, pythons, and Florida panthers. Even if they somehow managed to escape the predators, the extreme conditions and lack of food would mean certain death within days.I remember my Dad would donate to a group that found and cared for these abandoned animals – dog food, money, whatever he could do to help. One day I went along with him when he was dropping off supplies, and they showed us a dog they had just found. She had formerly been mistreated and abandoned in the Everglades, but she was full of love.We had an instant connection, and I asked my Dad if we could take her home. He said yes and when I looked at her, the first thing that came to my mind was that she was an Angel and that’s what I named her. Angel became part of our family, s...Francesco Vitali: A Serial Entrepreneur’s Message for Success

By Carla K. Johnson | Associated PressSEATTLE — The next big advance in cancer treatment could be a vaccine. After decades of limited success, scientists say research has reached a turning point, with many predicting more vaccines will be out in five years. These aren’t traditional vaccines that prevent disease, but shots to shrink tumors and stop cancer from coming back. Targets for these experimental treatments include breast and lung cancer, with gains reported this year for deadly skin cancer melanoma and pancreatic cancer.“We’re getting something to work. Now we need to get it to work better,” said Dr. James Gulley, who helps lead a center at the National Cancer Institute that develops immune therapies, including cancer treatment vaccines.More than ever, scientists understand how cancer hides from the body’s immune system. Cancer vaccines, like other immunotherapies, boost the immune system to find and kill cancer cells. And some new ones use mRNA, w...Latest news
