Bailey Ober helps Twins past Nationals in series finale

The three walks Bailey Ober gave issued in the first two innings of his start on Sunday matched a career high, but they didn’t mark a sign of things to come. While Ober was bitten by some early-inning control problems, he quickly settled in and gave the Twins a performance they needed, helping them stop a three-game slide.Ober’s 5 2/3 innings, some solid defense and just enough offense helped the Twins to a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon in the series finale against the Nationals at Target Field, staving off a sweep in the process.Making his first start of the season, Ober issued a walk to a pair of batters in the first inning before allowing a double to Keibert Ruiz, giving the Nationals the lead at the time. But for the remainder of his outing, he didn’t allow a runner to reach second base. Ober did allow a pair of hits in the fifth inning — he only gave up three in his start — but some good defense helped him out of the inning. (AP) — Fox Corp.'s $787.5 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems over defamation charges is eye-popping, but the ultimate cost to the media company is likely to be much lower. On Tuesday, Fox settled with Dominion over charges that Fox News baselessly accused the company of rigging its voting machines against former President Donald Trump in 2020. It was the most-watched media libel case in decades. Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! Fox had about $4 billion of cash on hand as of December 2022, and MoffettNathanson analyst Robert Fishman expects the company to pay the settlement during the current quarter. How much the lawsuit will actually end up costing Fox is unclear because there are ways it can defray some of the expense, primarily through insurance and the use of tax deductions. Fox can deduct the Dominion settlement from its income taxes as an expense necessary for the cost of doing business. Fox Chief Communi...The front door, threshold of welcome—and perilous border

NEW YORK (AP) — The American front door is a place where the welcome mat offers friendly greetings, where affable neighbors knock or ring, where boxes brimming with possibility are delivered. An American front door is where signs trumpet words of warning, where cameras monitor visitors in high definition, where intruders find an entry point. Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! It is where home meets a world full of potentially good things. It is where only a hunk of wood or metal separates the innermost spaces of home from a world full of chaos. In a land where private property is venerated and “get off my lawn” has become a mantra of jokey crankiness, the American front door is the landscape’s most intimate and personal of borders, the place where the public sphere encounters private space—occasionall...Great Danes down UNH to secure home-field advantage

After months of wintry weather battered the West Coast with torrential rains and snow, California’s hillsides are now bursting with orange, yellow and purple hues so vibrant that they are visible from space.Tourists are coming in droves to see these so-called “super blooms,” which occur when large amounts of precipitation in natural landscapes intersect with years of drought, according to California’s Department of Parks and Recreation.Prolonged drought conditions eliminated the grasses and weeds that would have otherwise consumed nutrients, enabling the growth of what the agency described as “spectacular blooms” — events that last occurred in 2019 and 2017.“The seeds hang out for years and years in the soil. And when you get a good rain, they're like, 'Oh, okay, great, time to come out,’” Valerie Eviner, a plant sciences professor at the University of California Davis, told The Hill.“So we do tend to see those big flushes,” she said, noting that “super bloom” is more of a popu...Deal paves way for special state assembly hearing to address fentanyl epidemic

It was a busy week at the state capitol where Republican and Democratic lawmakers agreed to a behind-the-scenes deal to schedule a special hearing in the coming week to take up delayed fentanyl bills. Democrats and Republicans say they're pleased these bills will get a hearing, but some say the process it took to get to this point is unacceptable. "We have good ideas, but you won't even vet them," California Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher said. "You won't even hold a hearing on them. That's the problem."Authors of these bills say the legislation seeks to target fentanyl dealers and increase penalties for them. However, Assembly Public Safety Committee Chair Reggie Jones Sawyer argued some of the proposals, "were duplicative or provided no rational solutions at all." "The fentanyl epidemic is impacting every city and every community in our state...And so our response has to be about coming together with real solutions," San Francisco Assemblymember Matt Haney said.
