Scan through the current holiday album charts and you might have a hard time believing that we are indeed in 2023.That’s because so many of the top sellers — to this very day — remain Christmas records that came out years, if not decades ago. We’re talking about such multiplatinum efforts as Michael Buble’s “Christmas” (released in 2011), NSYNC’s “Home for Christmas” (1998), Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas” (1994), the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (1965) and Nat King Cole’s “Christmas Song” (1960) — all of which ranked among the top 10 sellers when Billboard’s holiday album charts returned this season. We totally get it. Those are some of our favorites, too. (OK, maybe not the NSYNC one.)Yet, as much as we enjoy listening to Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is Here” and Johnny Mathis’ “Sleigh Ride” each December, we also dig hearing new Christmas releases as well. And there is never a shortage of new ones to choose from, as artists from all kinds of dif...Santa Rosa firefighters respond to blaze at three-story apartment complex

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Tomlin laughed. Then he bit his tongue.Asked if he could describe a bafflingly flat 24-10 loss to Arizona on Sunday in one word, the longtime Pittsburgh Steelers coach smiled, let out a somewhat sarcastic chuckle, and cautioned that he needed to watch what he said before settling on “subpar.”That’s one word for it.Here’s another. Well actually, here are two: poorly timed. The NFL regular season is a grind both physically and mentally, particularly for a team such as the Steelers that engages in rock fights weekly. Upsets happen every Sunday (or Monday, or Thursday). No team — no matter how good — is immune.Flat spots happen. They are unavoidable. It’s one of the reasons the 1972 Miami Dolphins pop champagne every year when the last unbeaten team falls.Yet the Steelers had thought they’d gotten their mystifying no-show out of the way in Houston in Week 4, a loss that looking back doesn’t seem nearly as bad now as it did in the momen...Virginia officials certify 2023 legislative election results, other electoral contests

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s State Board of Elections voted unanimously to certify the 2023 legislative elections and other electoral contests during a meeting Monday in Richmond. After brief remarks from Department of Elections staff and without any debate, the board took its vote, effectively signing off on the results. Democrats held their Senate majority in November and flipped control of the House of Delegates. The leaders of the two major state parties were on hand for the meeting. In remarks afterward to reporters, they said they wanted to convey their confidence in Virginia’s elections system at a time when polling shows many Americans remain critical about the state of U.S. democracy.“I’m satisfied with the way the election was administered, and the ultimate tabulations that were done, and the final determinations and the certification today,” said Rich Anderson, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia.
